| What a surprise- from Aidan Lawson - Wednesday, December 23, 2009The last thing I expected to find was a letter asking for details about a former cricketer who died before I was born, and I am 64!!
A gentleman by the name of Barry Greenbank has written last week. He is researching the lives of former cricketers who played for Northumberland and is looking for information about Tommy Graham who played for Ryton between 1898 and 1906! Well safe to say Tommy was not alone in Ryton Cricketers who were selected for Northumberland, others that immediately spring to mind are: Gordon Clough, Alan Clark, Lee Crozier, and Avajit Maitra (at u23 level). So it is a pleasure that we will be able to help drawing on the pool of information catalogued over the years, first by Mr William A. Cocks and more recently by myself. Saleem played for Blue Flames CC in 2009 in the Northumberland League where he helped them clinch the championship as well as topping the batting and finishing 3rd in the bowling averages. Saleem has played in NTSCL previously for Cowgate, and is a welcome addition to the squad. |
| Return to losing ways! - Tuesday, November 10, 2009Ryton CC 5-a-side team returned to league action with a 16-8 defeat at the hands of "Urine Trouble". In a contest closer than the score suggests, Ryton, were always 5 goals down, however played some neat, attacking football. Fitness seemed to be the key as players could not keep up with the pace of the opposition for the 55 minute game. Scoerers in a sometimes fiesty enounter were Robinson (Lovenkrands), Crichton (Crouch), Rowell 4 (Viduka) and Fordhams 1st goal since infant 3 in the big yard (Year 2). Players should make their availability known asap to avoid a repeat of this week when players went to the "smoke" to get their hair straightened or something! |
| Junior Training - Tuesday, November 10, 2009Training for U11 & U13 players has recommenced at Ryton School on Monday nights. Sessions are from 7.30-9pm. All playing abilities are welcomed, especially children in Year 3-6. Current juniors are encouraged to "Bring a friend" next week. |
| 10-0 romp - Tuesday, November 03, 2009Ryton CC Powerleague 5-a-side team aka Take Pity FC romped to a 10-0 win against Vacant FC last night. Goals were shared amongst Robinson (Gazza), Bailey (Dowie), Harms (Fellaini), Fordham (Molby) & Henderson. A splendid performance from Sutton (Southall) meant he kept his first clean-sheet since Junior 4. Well done to all players involved, looking forward to next week. |

| Ryton CC 5-a-side - Thursday, October 29, 2009Ryton CC 5 -side team (Take Pity FC) resumed battle this week. Facing League Champs "kings of Stinky", Ryton slumped to a 14-2 defeat, a massive improvement on the previous meeting between the 2 teams. Ryton struggled with onyl 5 players and no designated GK. Some hefty challenges went unnoticed by the ref who also seemed to favour the opposition in certain periods. MOM- Bailey (Jaap Stam)-ran all night, even with a sore big toe
Thursday saw Ryton again without a GK, but with 6 players, play "I'm massive y'knaa". A previous meeting between the 2 teams ended 11-10, however, both teams had several changes, and Ryton continued on the losing streak losing 17-7. Team-play is much better against very experienced, organised and tough opponents. Look out for next Tues result. MOM-Robinson (Stuart Ripley)- 4 goals and 1 assist. |
| Junior Nets - Saturday, October 24, 2009Junior Nets re-start at Ryton Comprehensive on Monday 2nd November. Sessions will run from 7.30-9.00pm. | Defeated in the rain - Wednesday, September 30, 2009Ryton CC 5-a-side team suffered their 2nd defeat of the season, going down 11-10 last night in the Power Lge Div A. A much more even game than their 1st run-out, saw Ryton lead 6-5 at 1/2 time, with Robinson, Bosnich and Campo on the scoresheet. However, as age and fitness took its toll, Ryton went down in the final couple of moments. Hopefully, Ryton will be strengthened by the return of Dowie (Bailey) and Molby (Fordham) for next Tues encounter. |
| AGM 20th October - Wednesday, September 30, 2009Could all members please note that the AGM is October 20th at 7.30pm. Please make sure you attend this meeting. |
| Ryton CC 5-a-side team - Wednesday, September 23, 2009Ryton CC 5-a-side team started its season with a bang last night in the Gateshead Power League. However, administrators entered the team, aka Take Pity FC, into the Premier Division instead of the 3rd Division. Ryton, comprising of Messrs Robinson, Sutton, Harms & Fordham, were up against League Champs, the Beer Guzzlers. After Ryton took an early lead, the final score of 27-3 was flattering to say the least. Hopefully, next weeks game will be against weaker opposition. |
| Season Review - Wednesday, September 16, 2009Ryton's very poor season finally ended on the 12th September with the no usual sound on "nil points" finging in the ears of the 1st XI. All the hard-work and dedication over the previous 3 seasons of players, members and parents alike was tossed away in the blink of an eye, meaning that Ryton's 1st XI were relegated finishing bottom with 100 points and will play NTSCL A2 in 2010, and Ryton's 2nd XI, 4th bottom before the final match of the season.
It had promised to be another strong season, with players keen to pick up from where they had left off in 2008, the 1st XI finishing 5th. However, appalling attendance at winter nets and the failure to secure either an overseas or local professional hinted at things to come. The season went from bad to worse with injuries, suspensions, player unavailabilty and finally resignations of 1st XI captains, meaning that several players from the 2nd and 3rd team having to fill the breach of the players not willing to play. In a league which feeds into the NE Premier League and with several clubs boasting either ex or current 1st class players amongst their ranks, for a team to have so many influential players missing or not performing only 1 outcome was possible-RELEGATION.
Following a reasonably well attended club meeting after the final match of the season, everybody who was in attendance was informed that club have decided that they are to return to grassroots and develop a culture of learning and progress amongst its players by encouraging local players to play for their local club, focus on junior development with the application into the Hetton Lyons Sunday League to help these juniors and only to pay a professional, instead of having several players on the pay-roll.
Positives of 2009
Dedication and commitment of players playing for teams above their natural ability.
Work of the committee to raise-funds and explore avenues to improve the structure of the clubhouse.
New members embracing themselves into the everyday running of the club.
Enthusiasm and commitment of the Junior core.
Negatives 2009
Poor attendance at winter nets.
Lack of availability for matches, especially 1st XI.
Poor inter-player relationships, especially 1st XI.
Results, especially 1st XI.
Lack of enthusiasm from senior players to help the club.
Aims for 2010
Senior teams to become competitive in their new league.
To engage a new professional before AGM.
Improve the general atmosphere surrounding the club, returning to "family" feel.
Re-engage with lost local players.
Practice, practice, practice.
Surely 2010 cannot get any worse thatn 2009? It is upto you to make sure that this does not happen!!
That is all!! |
| 2009 finally bows out - Wednesday, September 16, 2009The 2009 finally bowed in a typical poor display against 3 times champion elect Swalwell on Saturday. Again, Ryton decimated by unavailability, fielded a team consisting of 7 second team players, against a team including 2 ex-1st-class players!! Skipper Robinson won his 1st and only toss of the season, and decided that an early finish was preferable toan afternoon in the sun chasing leather. At 35-0, it looked a decent decision to bat 1st. The introduction of spinner Phillips changed the course of the innings, as he claimed 5-17. Only Robinson (22), Dobson (25) and Sutton (12) managed double figures as Ryton were bundled out for another score of under 100, and did not fulfill their 50 overs once in the whole season. It was also noteable that not one of Ryton's players posted a score of 50+ all season, only Ben Harmison managed this.
The bowling of Ryton started with Cawthorn bowling sharply, but again going for boundaries and dropped catches as Johnson chanced his arm, ending 40 not out. O'Neill started from the pavillion end in what was his last match before retiring. He claimed Ryton's only wicket, and the cricket grounds of the North East will definitely be a quieter place without Tank/Waddler's dulcet tones. Swalwell knocked the runs off for 1 wicket in 15 overs.
Ryton's 2nd Xi season also finished on a sour note going down at home to bottom club Alnwick by 25 runs. |
| Club Meeting 12th Sept 6.30pm start - Thursday, September 03, 2009Ryton CC management committee have decided to hold a club meeting after the last game of the current season. ALL players and any club member (social or parent) should attend the meeting, which will start after the 2nd team game against Backworth or at 6.30pm, whichever is earlier. The management committee will put forward ideas and plans for the coming season and also discuss the long-term plan of the club. There will be an open forum at the end of the meeting for people to put forward their thoughts and opinions. |
| 1st team @ Tynedale - Sunday, August 30, 2009Ryton's 1st XI woes continued with a thrashing at Tynedale. Again, injuries and unavailability meant an under-strength 1st team travelled up the river. Skipper Sutton decided to bat, and this seemed like a good decision. However 10 overs later and at 18-6, Ryton were only cocncerned with beating their previous lowest score of 32, co-incidentally against Tynedale in 2003. A stand of 40 from Sutton and O'Neill got Ryton upto 75.
O'Neill struck early removing Clark and professional Stewart in the same over, Tynedale were 4-2. However, some fortunate stroke play and some poor bowling, meant that Tynedale knocked the runs off without further loss within 14 overs.
However, Ryton's 2nd team snatchedd victory from the jaws of defeat with a 6 run victory over Consett. Ryton could only post 94, but managed to bowl out the visitors for 88. Well done lads. |
| Basement battle - Sunday, August 23, 2009Ryton's relegation to A2 in 2010 was confirmed yesterday with a resounding 110 run defeat by 2nd bottom team Benwell & Walbottle. Ryton's team, decimated with unavailabilty and injury alike, was made up of 4 juniors and 5 2nd team regulars. Such is the lack of player participation running through the club currently, the 2nd team had to forfeit their game at Cowgate as they could not muster 11 bodies!
Ryton were asked to bowl first, Sutton losing his maiden toss. Chances came thick and fast from opener Mansoor, being dropped 3 times and a very close run-out chance in the first 10 overs, and Ryton were made to pay as he hit some enormous sixes to post 83, before being caught on the boundary by Harms of Robinson. O'Neill chipped in with 2-49 from his 15 overs, looking more and more like Chris Waddle every day, sporting his 80's perm, O'Neill was in fine voice all day with his pearls of wisdom. The pick of the bowlers however was 16 year-old Dean Henderson, who returned 2-18 from 6 overs-definitely one for the future. Opposition skipper Prudhoe scored 67 before Henderson picked him and Reed up in the space of 3 overs. Eventually Benwell finished on 275-6, with Robinson snaring the 6th in the final over.
Openers Reid and Robinson had decided to put the score out of their mind, but Robinson's mind was obviously elsewhere as he went for a duck 2nd over, with a leading edge to gully from Brown. Reid was soon accounted for by the same bowler, before another bright sign appeared as young Harms and Liddle put on a 50+ stand. Both youngsters showed great maturity and talent with smoe excellent drives and leg-side flicks being the order of the day. Harms was caught for 39, and Liddle bowled by Mansoor for 40. Some huge hitting down the order from Sporty Spice Cawthorn (28*) and some cultured drives from Stevens, got Ryton upto a score of 169, with Bainbridge retired hurt after spraining an ankle running a quick?!? two.
The defeat put the final nail in the coffin in what has been a turbulent season both on and off the park. However, with changes in place for 2010 season already implemented, the rebuilding work has already started for what should be an testing but enjoyable year for Ryton CC. |
| Bank Holiday Geordie Games - Friday, August 14, 2009Sunday 30th August will see a Ryton CC Cricket/Geordie Games Day. All players, both junior and senior are welcome to enter, as well as parents, family members and friends. The day will have entrants split into 6 teams, who will then take part in 6-a-side cricket games, Geordie Games events (100m dash, toss the caber, wellie hoy etc) and also several individual cricket competitions. There will be prizes for the winning team and also individuals who win the cricket competitions. A BBQ will run throughout the day, with food being on sale, as well as the bar being open. The competition will start at 1pm prompt, with all participating players registering at 12.30pm. |
| 1st XI Update - Tuesday, August 11, 2009Ryton's 1st XI game v Annfield Plain was washed out following heavy rain on the Friday.
Ryton were defeated against Leadgate the following week. Ryton bowled out their hosts for 170, but were restricted to 149-9 in their reply.
Ryton hoped to make it a league double against Morpeth. They had moved to 51-1 before another mid-order collapse left Ryton 54-4, and ended up 115 all out. In reply, Morpeth knocked off the runs losing 2 wickets in the process in side 20 overs. However, the actions of several Morpeth players left a lot to be desired. Not content with letting 2 Under 11 boys score for both teams (Ryton providing both of them) and then castigating the boys from the sideline, Morpeth decided to uphold the Aussie frame of mind running through the team, and edge a ball to 3rd slip and not walk. DISGRACEFUL. To then threaten to smash a bat over somebody's head for questionning the spirit of the game says it all,
Finally, Ryton came up well short against title challenging Shotley Bridge. Shotley posted 253 all out, with Carlin 63 and Graham 47 being the top scorers. Robinson rolled back the years with 15 consecutive overs, imparting some devilish spin and wily flight to claim 4-82, Cawthorn 3-63 and O'Neill 2-50.
In reply, Ryton were all out for 128. Joe Harms finished 38*, David Bailey again could not quite post a deserved 50 and was caught for 31, and Matty Oxley cultivated his way to 18. It now seems certain Ryton will be relegated this season, being over 50 points from safety and games running out. |
| Captain resigns - Tuesday, August 11, 2009Ryton's 1st XI captain has formally handed in his resignation as 1st XI captain and player with immediate effect. Paul hopes to return to Stocksfield CC to play this season. Vice-captain Rowell and other senior players will take on the role of the captain in the remainder of the season. |
| Betts & Hubber show - Monday, July 20, 2009Ryton's 1st XI were again defeated, this time at the hands of Sacriston. Cawthorn made an early breakthrough, bowling Peel for 9, before Robinson accounted for Fort and Hubber with his off-spin. Betts arrived at the crease and never looked in any trouble as he recorded an unbeaten 107. Claughan, Potts and Jones all chipped in as Sacriston posted 285-5.
Ryton's reply got off to the wrost start, Robinson bowled for 0 3rd ball. Sutton bore the brunt of Sacristons frustrations, especially Hubber, who finsed off with 6-28 .Bailey looked comfortable and scored a fine 30, however only Dobson (16) and Sagar 29 (inc 3 sixes) made double figures. Ryton 119 all out.
Ryton's 2nd team were also defeated comfortably by Whichkam. |
| Rain stops play - Monday, July 20, 2009Torrential rain all-day Friday and several heavy downpours on Saturday meant no play at all for either of Ryton's teams. |
| Summer Cricket Camp - Monday, July 20, 2009Ryton CC are holding their annual Summer Cricket Camp for Junior cricketers. The camp is 27-31 July from 10-3.30pm, the cost being £30. If any junior cricketers are interested, please see Neil Robinson at Friday practice or ring on 414 1589 to confirm booking. |
| Batting blown away - Monday, July 06, 2009Ryton's 1st XI entertained Percy Main as the 2nd half of the season kicked off in blazing sunshine. Ryton, including Durham's Ben Harmison in their ranks were asked to bat 1st on a drying pitch, which ahd been soaked by Fridays deluge. Ryton's openers played conservatively until they felt they were in, and moved the score onto 35-0, before Robinson was bowled by Butler for 21. Harmison quickly follwed for 18, caught in gully. Bailey scored well around the wicket, albeit with a stiff neck! The introduction of Ali, Main's pro, was the turning point as he returned figures of 5-8, and his deceptive left-arm swing blew away Ryton's middle and lower order. Again poor shot selection and ability to build an innings had meant Ryton were bowled out for less than 3 figures for the 4th time this season.
Harmison and Cawthorn opened for Ryton, and snared Agarwarl in Cawthorn's 1st over LBW. The same bowler then claimed another 3 wickets, and at 39-4, Ryton sniffed a surprise victory. However, Ali played some exquisite straight drives, and never looked like tarnishing his average. He finished off 46 not out, and victory was seasled by 6 wickets in 20 overs.
Ryton's 2nd team put in an excellent display at league leaders Lanchester, losing by 5 wickets. Scoring 185, Lanchester limped along to victory with 4 overs to go. Another fine performance from a young team, inter-mingled with some ageing experienced players. |
| Rain again - Monday, June 29, 2009Both of Ryton's senior fixtures fell foul of the weather again this weekend. Ryton's 1st XI clash v Swalwell was called off mid-morning, as was the 2nd XI trek to Alnwick. Both teams scored 5 points. |
| Rain stops play - Monday, June 22, 2009Ryton's 1st XI game at relegation neighbours Lintz was halted by heavy rain. Ryton, fielding their strongest team of the season, were asked to bat and reached 19-0 off 4.1 overs, Harmison 11* and Robinson 7*, before rain meant no further play was possible. Ryton remain rooted to the bottom of the league, however 4 teams remain close together, so a couple of wins could propel a team up the league.
Ryton's derby against Greenside also fell foul to the weather. Ryton had reached 98-4 off 25, with MVP Mackay 53*, before rain stopped the game. |
| Club BBQ & Happy CAts - Friday, June 19, 2009Local band the Happy Cats return to Ryton CC in conjunction with Bainbridge Productions on Saturday the 11th July. Tickets are £5 and can be obtained from Dave on 413 5403. There will also be a BBQ during the evening, bring your own meat, salad etc is provided. Please try to get to the event as The HAppy Cats always provide an excellent evening of entertainment. You can check them out on the following www.thehappycats.com . |
| 1st team rolled over - Friday, June 19, 2009Another thumping for Ryton's 1st XI wzs handed out by Hexham outfit Tynedale last Saturday. Ryton, with several players missing, decided to field first on a hot day. Tynedale's openers Clark and Barber got off to a flyer, with Clark having an early life being dropped in the slips. At 170-0 of 25, Ryton were looking at a record score against them. David Bailey though managed to claw some respectability back into the game taking his maiden 5-for, ending up with 5-65 of 15. Barber and Clark both scored 80+ and professional Stewart was caught for 75 last ball of the innings.
Tynedale's opening bowlers found some swing and extravangant bounce, and soon snared Bailey caught off his pad. Robinson and Harms rebuilt the innings, and at 65-1, Ryton looked in reasonable shape. A flurry of quick wickets followed, and the inevitable collapse happened once again, with Ryton all-out for 100 in 35 overs. Ryton's batting has been the problem this season, failing to bat their allocation of 50 overs this season.
On a brighter note, Ryton's 2nd XI got back on track with a 9 run win at Consett. Oxley with 56 and Mackay with 39 were the main-stay of Ryton's innings, before all the bowlers chipped in with wickets, Dean Henderson bowling well with 2-33. |
| Consecutive defeats. - Wednesday, June 10, 2009Ryton's 1st XI poor form continued with 2 defeats in 2 weekends. A thrashing by Ashington by 200 runs was followed by a sloppy batting performance to give Benwell & Walbottle victory and consign Ryton to bottom spot again. Ashington 280-5, Ryton 89 all-out. Benwell & Walbottle 112 all out (Cawthorn 6-58), Ryton 53 all-out. |
| Victory snatched at the death - Monday, May 25, 2009Ryton's first XI were denied a 2nd victory on the last ball of the game against Shotley Bridge. Both teams were without their professionals for this game, although Shotley, on paper, had much the stronger team. The visitors were asked to bat on a green track, but at 35-0 they could have no complaints about the wicket. Some wily bowling from the seasoned campaigners O'Neill and Reid reduced Shotley to 42-4. Wickets continued to fall as several partnerships came to nothing. Cawthorne soon wrapped up the tail, to finish with 4 more wickets. Shotley Bridge were 126 all, Carlin remained unbeaten on 46.
Ryton's innings got off to a slow start with Brown finding some early movement through the air and off the deck. Bailey and Reid were both victims of his bolwing and LBW decisions. Young Harms and old Morris regrouped and a stand of 40 put Ryton back in the game. The innings followed a similar route as the Shotley innings, with batsmen struggling in bowler friendly conditions. Some fine straight shots from Wilkin and Cawthorne meant Ryton needed 7 off the last over with 2 wickets remaining. This was wittled away down to 3 off 2 before Sutton was caught. O'neill strode to the wicket purposefully and hit a fine sweep shot that was going for 6 before being caught on the line at mid-wicket. Ryton were all out for 124. Defeat meant that Ryton slipped back into the relegation places (a term all to familiar on this weekend), however, with the return of Harmison, Rowell and Robinson in the coming weeks, Ryton should have the quality to push up the table, having nearly beaten a team pushing for the title.
Ryton's 2nd XI continued to show championship form witha 3rd win on the bounce at Seaton Burn. Without their pied piper Mackay, Ryton made an impressive 239-6, with Eddy 87, Stevens 59 and Nattrass 36 the main scorers. Ryton then bowled the hosts out for 128. |
| Morpeth sunk - Friday, May 22, 2009Ryton 1st XI arrived at Longhurst on Saturday knowing that a win would be invaluable following four unconvincing defeats in the league. Ryton were again boosted by the presence of new professional Ben Harmison in the team who undoubtedly provides depth to both batting and bowling departments.
Morpeth won the toss and elected to bat despite a damp wicket and a bad forecast for the afternoon.
Things could not have started worse for the home side as opening batsman J Craigs attempted a pull shot against the bowling of Cawthorn only to misjudge the pace and get caught at square leg. Paceman Cawthorn then proceeded to go through Morpeth’s top order like a hot knife through butter with some outstanding seam bowling. He finished the day with impressive figures of 6-34 and was ably assisted by Ben Harmison who bowled consistently with pace and bounce and ended with 1-39. Ryton’s two other bowlers O’Neill and Wilkin also provided good performances in a good all-round bowling display. Morpeth stuttered to an unimpressive 102 all out, the home side never really got going after losing quick wickets early on.
Ryton took to the field needing 103 for a much needed victory but things didn’t start well as opener Ian Reid left a ball that swung back to hit him on the pad, he was given lbw. Bailey and Rowell steadied the ship before rain intervened at 39-1. When the players returned to the field Ryton got on top of the game with both Bailey and Rowell reaching the 20s and going a long way to securing victory. Rowell eventually fell for 26 and Bailey soon followed for 28 but any thoughts of a collapse were quickly put to bed by some impressive batting from Harmison not out 19 and Fordham not out 12. Ryton eventually securing victory at 103 for 3. Hopefully this will be a sign of things to come!
Ryton's 2nd team picked another vixtory at home to Morpeths 2nd XI. Fielding only 8 players, Ryton managed to secure 20 points with Ryton's 2009 MVP, Steve Mackay, picking up a 5-for as well as scoring 62. |

| Still searching for victory - Sunday, May 10, 2009It was 4 games on teh spin without a victiry, as Ryton's 1st XI lost to Leadgate by 18 runs. On what can only be described as an awful day, Ryton asked the visitors to bat, opening up with professional Harmison and Cawthorne. Harmison bowled with real pace and bounce with the wind at his back, but it was Cawthorne who claimed the 1st wicket. Harmison then removed elder statesman Jackson, before the rain intervened at 68-2. Seven overs were lost to rain, as Leadgate puched onto 110-2, before Cawthorne snared 2 wickets in an over, to make it 115-5. Smith batted through to the end scoring a 50, before Harmison and Wilkin picked up 2 more wickets, with the score on 183-7.
Ryton started out with Reid and Bailey, and the score was 35 before Reid was dubiously given out caught behind. Rowell was promoted to number 3 and scored 8 when he was also caught behind for 8. A lot rested on professional harmison's shoulders, and he rode his luck early inhis innings, being dropped on the boundary. Bailey looked more at ease the longer he batted, but was out stumped for 47 off Jackson. Harmison continued to play some elegant shots, interspersed with some outrageous sweep shots. Morris and Dalby were both out for ducks, as the overs ticked away. Needing 7 an over from the last 6 overs, Harmison smashed an enourmous 6 first ball of the over, only to be stumped mext ball. This effectively put the game out of reach for Ryton, however, Ryton still lived in hope. They ended up all out for 164, with Smith and Fletcher both finishing with 3 wickets.
Ryton's 2nd XI fared better though, recording their 1st win in 15 months, by defeating Chopwell by 26 runs. Ryton scored 207, with Fordham, Oxley and Eddy all scoring 40's, befored dismissing Chopwell for 179, the old war-horse Mackay snaffling 4-32. |

| Ryton go down again - Monday, May 04, 2009Ryton's poor start to the 2009 season continued away at Annfield Plain. Ryton hoped to have Durham star Ben Harmison in their ranks for the game, but his involvement in the Duham-Somerset match put paid to that. Ryton did welcome new recruit Mark Cawthorne into the ranks after joining from neighbours Blaydon. Cawthrone made a dream start removing the ever vocal Carr 2nd ball of the match-well batted! Donnelly was Cawthornes next victim for 22. Newstead and Maughan then added a hundred, as the score was always ticking at over 4 an over. Some lusty hitting and fortunate batting meant that the Plain totalled an impressive 247-7, with Cawthorne 3-42 and Rowell 2-39 the bowlers to pick up wickets at the end. O'Neill bowled his 15 overs 1-44.
Ryton filled their boots at the tea-table, a fine effort, and opened up with Reid and Bailey, against Khan and Phillips. The socre was 20 before Bailey again dragged on. Morris entered to a friendly welcome and upped the scoring before being bowled by Khan. Young Dalby/Soulsby then showed glimpes of real talent, his extra cover 6 being the shot of the day, before he was needlessly run-out for 30, hopefully the youngster can continue to pay like that in the future. Reid soon follwed for a dilligent 46, but the rot had set in, as Ryton were quickly bowled out for 131, after being 115-2. Some poor umpiring and again poor shot selection/running not helping matters. Khan and Gohery both finished with 3-18. Ryton did manage to pick up 5 bonus points, but ominously a long season lies ahead. Hopefully Harmison will be in the ranks for the next home game against Leadgate.
Ryton's 2nd XI bowled Ponteland out for 116, however could only manage 86 in reply. |
| Harmison signs for Ryton - Monday, May 04, 2009Ryton are pleased to announce the major signing of Durham's Ben Harmison as their professional for 2009. Hopefully Ben will play a huge part in maintaining Ryton's place in Lge A1 of the NTSCL, and will be available for games when he is not required by Durham. You can check out Ben's stats here http://content.cricinfo.com/england/content/player/15361.html. Welcome Ben Harmison! |
| Stroll for Sacriston - Monday, April 27, 2009Ryton 1st XI again struggled to compete with the bat for the 2nd game in a row. Asked to bat on a dry but green track, Ryton's openers were both dismissed without scoring by the impressive Betts & Hubber. Ssome lusty hits from Morris and deft nudges from the experienced Reid took the score past 30, before Betts removed Reid. Rowell played some fine drives and pulls to score 28, before he edged behind. Ryton crawled to 91 all-out, not even managing a bonus point.
O'Neill and 2-teas Thompson opened up, but it was the introduction of "Golden Elbow" Robinson that brought the first wicket. bowling Fort. Hubber and Shield upped the scoring rate as the rain approached, and a 45 minute rain break merely delayed the inevitable. Bailey and Soulsby were brought into the attack, and Bailey duly took his maiden 1st team wicket with a brilliant 1 handed effort in the gully from Robinson accounting for ex Ryton pro Shield. Unforunately, Robinson dislocated his shoulder in the process and will now be out for several weeks. Bailey then bowled a gem of a full-toss to Claughan, who went 1st ball caught by his own player, on for the injured Robinson. The same player had to find his own way back to Sacriston. New batsman Betts arrived at the crease, chuntering away, and quickly finished the game off inside 20 overs.
Ryton's 2nd team were also dismissed for under 100, and were comprehensively beated inside 15 overs. |

| Ryton routed! - Sunday, April 19, 2009Ryton 1st XI got the 2009 season underway with a nightmare batting performance at the hands of newly promoted Percy Main. Ryton, fielding several new recruits, were asked to bat on a slow and low wicket. Openers Robinson & Bailey moved the score onto 45 in 13 overs before Bailey was bowled fortuitously, dragging on with his foot. Robinson was next out for 36, a stunning catch at extra-cover dismissed the former skipper. Ryton then came under the spell of skipper Walkers left-arm spin. Walker finished with 5-8 from 10 overs, his last 7 overs being maidens. Several batsmen however, must look at their shot selection in matches to come. Ryton spluttered to a paltry 67 all-out.
Ryton were determined to go down fighting, and so it proved. O'Neill, as loud as ever and Wilkin opened up, and Percy Main were soon introuble at 16-2. A flurry of boundaries from Clarke moved the score on, before O'Neill picked up him and batsman number 4, to leave Percy Main 45-4. The introduction of Robinson into the attack brought back memories of yesteryear. The quote of "serious heat" was heard from one member of the watching gallery. However, he was unable to pick up a wicket as Percy Main won by 6 wickets within 20 overs. Ryton entertain Sacriston next week, hopefully with their overseas professional in place.
Ryton's 2nd XI fared little better, but put in a spirited performance to end up losing by 20 runs chasing 212. Old-timers Mackay and Reid batted well late on, however, 6 an-over always proved to much as wickets fell at regular intervals. |

The net sessions are actually costing the club money by the poor turnout of senior members. Surely this should not be the case!! | Winter Nets - Friday, November 14, 2008Negotiations are underway with Ryton Comprehensive with regard to winter training sessions. More information to follow soon. |
| Season Round-Up - Monday, September 15, 2008A season that promised so much for the 1st XI, finally ended as a damp squib on Saturday. Ryton's home match was again called off due to heavy rain overnight, added to the torrential rain the previous weekend, which had put paid to the home fixture with Ashington. This meant that Ryton had missed 7 out 11 fixtures due to poor weather, and left many feeling "what's the point!".
Ryton's previous game with Newcastle City had ended in a 6 wicket defeat at the hands of the Fawdon outfit. The game seemed more like the Royal Variety Show, with Newcastle City employing so many guests to appear for 1 game only!! However, this has some back to bite them, as they along with Backworth were relegated to Div A2. Percy Main and Morpeth replace these two clubs, gaining promotion from the second tier.
Ryton 1st XI eventually finished 5th, a creditable position on their return to A2, and means that they will be entering the Just Sport Competition in 2009 for only the 2nd time in their history. Well done to the players who have committed all season, in what was the most frustrating season in memory.
The recruitment drive for an influx of players to the club is already underway, to hopefully improve on the current position. The club has decided not to employ an overseas cricketer in 2009 after several incidents with the 2008 incumbent Anil Ridee, which left the club with a bad taste in its mouth. The phrase "had their fingers burned" springs to mind! Hopefully new players will have a knock on affect with the 2nd XI failing to win a game all year and so being relegated after 1 season in B1 division. Having to blood several juniors in A1 is not an ideal scenario.
Anyway, thank-you to all the players and club members who contributed throughout a turbulent 2008 season, and we look forward to seeing you at various fund-raising events throughout the winter. The website will be updated with any news or important matters. Any queries on anything, feel free to mail the website or contact Neil Robinson or Keith Morris. |
| 3-a-side - Tuesday, August 26, 2008A big thank-you for those players, members & guests who played in the 3-a-side competition on Bank Holiday Monday. On a day when the weather Gods were against us, 8 teams managed to turn out, and after 5 hours of cricket a team consisting of Neil Robinson, Mark Sagar and Luke Anderson won the competition with a bowl-out due to the torrential rain which had finally arrived. A good day was had by all, and hopefully this will become an annual event, with more of Ryton's cricketers taking part next year. |
| Summer Ball - Tuesday, August 26, 2008Ryton's Summer Ball is fast approaching- Friday September 26th. Again, it is due to be held at the Old Assembly Rooms in Newcastle. Tickets cost £35 each or £350 per table, and includes 4 course meal, wine, local band, disco and sports raffle. All proceeds will go towards the SITA bid fund. If you are interested in either buying single tickets or even buying a table, maybe for a corporate event, please contact either Neil Robinson or Keith Morris or e-mail the club. |
| Humbled at home - Tuesday, August 26, 2008Ryton's first XI suffered an 8 wicket defeat at the hands of 3rd place Annfield Plain. Ryton's skipper again lost the toss and was again asked to bat first on a very damp wicket. Robinson hit a four 2nd ball but was bowled 6th ball to set the tone for the day. A fight-back from Ridee and Morris took Ryton upto 50 before Ridee was out-foxed by a slower ball LBW. At 98-3 Ryton looked in a strong position, but amiddle order collapse meant that Ryton were 130 all-out, with only Morris (58) providing any resistance.
Ryton's bowlers got off to a sloppy start with wide deliveries, and at 30-0 off 5, the game was all but over, barring a miracle. O'Neill and Ridee took 2 wickets in consecutive overs to lift the spirits, but pro Fernando added to his 118* in the reverse fixture with 42* to finish the game inside 30 overs. Ryton scored 3 points and still remain in 5th position.
Ryton's 2nd team are still on the look out for the elusive 1st win of the season, this time going down at the hands of Burnopfield. |
| 3-a-side tournament - Thursday, August 21, 2008Remember, Bank Holiday Monday will mean a 3-a-side competition at Ryton CC. The games will start at 1pm, and teams will be picked at random from those people who enter. There is a £2 entry fee for each player, with cash prize on offer to the winning team. |
| I'll have a pizza that Adam! - Sunday, August 17, 2008Ryton's 1st XI finally resumed their cricket season with a fine 128 run victory over relegation threatened Leadgate. Heavy rain throughout the week had put yet another game in doubt, and even with over 1000 gallons of water removed from the pitch, the ground was still hardly suitable for a game of cricket.
Ryton, fielding a makeshift side, with several players making themselves unavailable for the 1st XI for varying reasons of credibility, were asked to bat first unsurprisingly. Both openers looked comfortable before Robinson was caught on the line for 12 off the bowling of the relic Jackson. A century stand between Morris and Ridee was halted with Ridee retiring hurt on 48, after straining his thigh. Morris and Moore continued the run-rate, with some big hitting and good running between the wickets, before Morris (sporting a a Quasimodo neck) was bowled for 53. Ridee returned with Morris as a runner and Moore was promptly bowled for 30 by Jackson. A farcical run-out involving Rowell and Morris meant that Ridee was run out for 78, after hitting 3 one-handed 6's when returning to the crease. Rowell, was then given out for the 2nd time in the day (has anybody ever had 2 ducks in 1 innings?) first ball LBW. Wickets continued to fall, until the Sagar brothers added a quick 20, and the Ryton innings ended 208 all-out.
Ryton's opening bowlers were O'Neill and Thompson, the latter 3 stones heavier after his efforts at the tea table. O'Neill struck in the first over, and Thompson had 1 wild over before being removed from the attack. A master-stroke bowling change from skipper Robinson brought pizza boy Wilkin into the attack, and he laid a thin-base on which Ryton formed their victory. He returned figures of 7-28 form 15 overs, taking the final wicket with his final ball to put the topping on a fine display of bowling. O'Neill went well from the other end, returning figues of 15-9-28-3. Ryton scored 20 points and Leadgate 5, to remain in 5th position, and still in contention for a Just Sport position for 2009 season.
A big thank you to all the boys who turned up, some with injuries. Everybody who played contributed, especially in the field, with some fine efforts from young Mark Sagar.
Ryton's 2nd XI are still searching for their 1st victory of the season, after being defeated comfortably at home. |
| 5 from 7 - Tuesday, August 12, 2008For the 5th weekend in 7, Ryton CC 1st XI game was cancelled due to heavy rain. Both team score 5 points, however, not a single ball was bowled in the Wellstream League this weekend. |
| Friday practice off - Thursday, August 07, 2008Friday's (8th August) club practice has been cancelled due to the U15 team re-arranging a cup game against Annfield Plain. |
| Duck Race Prize List - Tuesday, August 05, 2008Apologies for the delay. Please find attached the complete copy of all the Duck Race winners. |
| Rain returns - Monday, August 04, 2008Both of Ryton's senior teams games fell foul of the Saturday downpours. Torrential rain overnight and early morning meant that Ryton were one of only 2 games not to get played this weekend. Both teams were meant to play Backworth. |
| Player availability - Wednesday, July 30, 2008Could all players please make sure that if they are unavailable to play in games that they let their team manager or captain know in advance of the game. There have been several incidents in recent weeks where players have felt it not neccasary to inform their captain of their unavailability, or crying off 10 mins before the game and so leaving the team with 10 men. This is letting the club down, the team down and also putting the person responsible for the team in a very awkward and infuriating position. Remember, it is all players responsibility to let captains know if they can play in games they are required. |
| 1st team melt in the sun - Monday, July 28, 2008Ryton's !st XI were given a cricketing lesson by Sacriston in a 197 run defeat. Only 2 ponts separated the teams before the game, however, there seemed to be a large gulf in class between the teams by 7 0'clock. On a sweltering day, Ryton were asked to field and set about the task with Ridee and Taylor opening up. Taylor had opener Fort dropped twice early on, who rode his luck with 5 chances before posting 79. Pro King was given out caught behind for 43 and Betts was run out on 65. Ryton's bowlers toiled in the sun, and clawed some pride back late on with a flurry of wickets. Sacriston scoring 292-6 (Ridee 2-48, Taylor 0-35, O'Neill 1-72, Barr 0-28, Harms 1-49, Brooks 2-36).
Ryton's reply got off to a disastrous start, with Martin Hubber removing Ridee, Barr & Moore for 0 within 4 balls, Ryton tottering at 3-3. Rowell scored 14 before Betts had him caught at point. Robinson battled away before Hubber yorked him for 22, and Brooks was then bowled for 14. Wilkin followed shortly for a duck. It was left to youngster Harms to score 39 not-out to salvage some pride, the only plus point of the game, before Ryton were rolled for 95, and scoring 3 points. A poor all-round performance, and a huge improvement will be needed by all if they are to get back on the winning track v Backworth next week.
Rytons 2nd XI completed a miserable week on the field by being beaten heavily by Sacriston 2nd XI. Sacriston 209, Ryton 75 all-out. |
| Duck Race Round-Up - Thursday, July 24, 2008A fantastic day was again had at Ryton's 3rd Annual Duck Race on Sunday 20th July. A late flurry of duck sales meant that a flotilla (that means lots of ships Aki) of approx 300 ducks were set sail from Ovingham Scout Hut. A crowd of about 50 watched in aticipation as the willing helpers ushered the ducks down the raging torrent of a burn. After about 20 minutes the race had finished, and the results were in. The first 3 prizes were as follows (full result sheet to be posted later):
1) A.Bone- £200.
2) L.Atkinson £50 Debenhams Vouchers.
3) A.Bainbridge- Tyneside Golf Club Round for 4.
People then returned to the club for Scotty's BBQ, Aki's patter on the mike and several drinks. A good day was had by all, and the rain stayed off. Thanks go to the Ryton branch of Barclays for their help in organising the event and help with sponsorship. Proceeds from the Duck Race will go towards funding the SITA bid for the renovation of the changing rooms and clubhouse roof. A big thank-you to all who turned up and the usual band of people who helped make the day a great success. |
| Club shop up and running - Thursday, July 24, 2008Ryton's on-line club shop is now up and running. You can buy a variety of playing and casual wear which will be embroidered with the club badge and delivered to your door. Follow the link for CustomCricket on the Home page of this website. |
| Worth the hard work? - Monday, July 21, 2008Again the rain seemed to hold the upper hand for the 4th weekend out of 5. However, much gard work from players, ground-staff and members, meant that Ryton came away with 13 points in a timed-out game vs Benwell & Walbottle.
Ryton won the toss and inserted the opposition. The visitors had reached 3-0 off 6 overs before the 1st cloud-burst. The rain lasted 30 mins, but was so heavy it looked unlikely that an already wet outfield would be playable. However, both teams and umpires were keen to get a game, and play restarted after an early tea. Benwell reached 80-4 before shower No. 2 arrived. Again, torrential rain seemed destined to wash the game out, but 45 mins later, play resumed. Benwell managed to get to 175 all, having been 103-8 at one stage. A brisk 61 from Collins and some stout defence from 10 & 11 meant that time and the scoreboard was against Ryton. (Ridee 4-28, Taylor 3-40, O'Neill 2-42, Barr 0-15, Brooks 0-24, Wilkin 1-2).
Ridee opened with Rowell, in search of some quick runs. Both set off in earnest, and the score was 35 in 5 overs before Ridee was caught behind spectacularly for 17. Moore added some lusty blows before he was castled by Angus for 12. Rowell meanwhile continued his good form of late by dispatching some huge 6's in surrounding gardens. Robinson added 21 runs before he was bowled by Angus, but it was the departure of Rowell for 60 that meant Ryton had little hope of chasing the winning total. They did manage to get to 152-6, and gain another point, before the game was timed out at 8.30pm, Ryton had scored 152 in 21 overs in 1 hour 10 mins!!
No other teams could match the points score, and Ryton closed the gap on teams above them, however still remain 5th. They travel to Sacriston next weekend.
Ryton's 2nd team was called off early on Saturday morning. |
| More rain! - Tuesday, July 15, 2008For the 3rd weekend in 4, both the 1st and 2nd teams games were rained off without a ball being bowled. Both teams were playing Lintz, and instead of the usual hanging around until 4 before a decision is made, both games were abandoned on Sat morning following heavy rain on Thurs & Fri. |
| Games washed out - Sunday, July 06, 2008Ryton's home game against Tynedale was washed out on Sat 5th July. No play at all was possible as the outfield was turned into a swimming pool following torrential rain. Both teams score 5 points
Ryton's 2nd XI also suffered the same fate in the reverse fixture |
| A busy week for 1st XI - Thursday, July 03, 2008Ryton CC 1st XI were forced to play a ridiculously busy schedule, which included 4 games in 5 days.
Wed 25th June saw Ryton travel to Newcastle City in the League A Cup Quarter Final for a 20 over game. Ryton decided to field first on what turned out to be bomb-alley of a pitch, obviously several minutes had been taken to prepare the wicket! City's pro Mansoor rode his luck and posted 79 out of 148, with Thompson the pick of the bowlers. Ryton got off to a flier and were well in the hunt with Rowell, Iqbal and Brooks batting well. The game turned sour as the hosts, without a scorer, but with several people unwilling to help, decided to barrack Ryton's 11 year old scorer and complain about overs, runs etc. The game continued and Ryton ended up 8 runs short.
Friday 27th June meant Ryton had to make the trip to Chopwell in the Wellstream Cup Qtr final. Heavy rain meant that the game was reduced to 15 overs a side, and it was indicated that the game must be played as the semi final was on Sunday 29th June. Chopwell were asked to bat and with some lusty hits from Ryton resident Hornby, they posted 124-7 off 15 overs. Barr, Brooks, Ridee and Thompson all bowling their 3 overs economically. Robinson and Ridee put on 75 in the first 7 overs, before Robinson was bowled for 38. Ridee soon followed, both enduring some ridiculous abuse from the legends that are the Chopwell opening bowlers! Rowell continued from his 65 on Wed night with a quick 25, before Morris, Wilkin and Brooks finished the game off with 3 overs to spare.
Sat 28th June again Ryton were clocking up the miles, making the short trip to league leaders Swalwell, who had taken maximum points this season. Ryton were again missing 2 key batsmen, Moore and Akhtar. Asked to bat on a true but low wicket, Robinson was out 4th ball. Morris and Ridee put on 35 before Morris was caught on the line. Barr and Ridee steadied the ship, with Barr giving good support to pro Ridee. Barr bowled by Peart for 6. Rowell and Ridee then took the score past a hundred, until Rowell was caught on the line at long-off of Hawthorne. Wickets then steadily fell, Ridee out dubiously caught behind. Ryton finished up on 185-9, the first team to take point off Swalwell this year.
Swalwell's opening pair of Anderson and Hawthorne went at the total with gusto, however 3 dropped catches by the fielding side did not help matters. In difficult conditions, Rytons' bowlers were chopped and changed, however this did not alter the scoring rate with Anderson the 1st mad out for 92 off 100 balls, putting on 145 for the first wicket. Thompson the man to dismiss Anderson, caught on the line. Brooks soon dismissed Hawthorne, caught by Barr following a bit of sublime captaincy and subtle field changes. The total was never enough, Ryton succumbing in the 39th over, to lose by 8 wickets. Ryton stay in 4th position in the league, 10 points behind 2nd place Shotley Bridge.
The final chapter in what was proving a very unpopular cricket week, saw Ryton travel to Morpeth in the Wellstream Semi-Final on Sunday 29th June. Ryton only had 9 men at 11.30, with 14 players unavailable for varying reasons, and it was a shock when 11 men/boys/dogs turned up at the ground at 12.45!! Ryton lost the toss and Aussie skipper Reynolds decided to bat on what must be the best track in the league. A slow start followed, with Rowell making a breakthrough, Brooks the fielder. Reynolds then decided to show his class, somehow keeping out the guile and flight of opposition skipper Robinson. Morpeth then made hay in the sun against Ryton's part-time bowlers, racking up 285-6 in 40 overs, Reynolds not out 167. Ryton were always up against it at 7 an over, but it was not helped when professional Ridee played an awful slog to a junior bowler to be bowled for 11. Morris upped the run rate, but agian did not have the power and was caught on the line. Rowell, surely due a failure, then turned the game in Rytons' favour with a brisk 50, and when the rain came Ryton were only 3 runs behind. However, the rain relented and 2 quick wickets changed the game in Morpeths favour. Rowell caught behind for 50. Robinson remained and continued to chip away at the revised target of 260, but as wickets fell and Rytons batsmen came and went, the run rate was over 10 an over, Ryton were all out for 196 (Robinson 67, Rowell 50). A very frustrating end to a long few days, semi-finals do not come along every day, and so Ryton have 1 last chance of winning some silverware this season in the Gateshead Met Cup. Ryton play Chopwell and then face Greenside if they overcome Chopwell.

| Rain stops play - Sunday, June 22, 2008Rytons' 1st XI game at Ashington on Saturday 21st June was washed out without a ball being bowled. Ryton arrived at the Colliers ground in light drizzle, which soon turned into heavy rain. There was no chance of play starting against the hosts, who included Durham star Ben Harmison in their team. At 2.20pm, both captains agreed that any play was going to be impossible, and that opened the doorway for Dan Thompson to devour the entire Ashington food-stock at the tea table. Both teams scored 5points. Ryton travel to league leaders Swalwell next week, and also travel to Newcastle City on Wed and Chopwell on Friday. A win on Friday would then see Ryton play Morpeth in the Wellstream Cup semi-final on Sunday.
Ryton's 2nd XI was also washed out without a ball being bowled. |
| Winning ways return for 1st XI - Monday, June 16, 2008A comfortable 79 run victory over Newcastle City gave Ryton 1st XI their first league win in 3 games. Ryton opted to bat on a new wicket, and both openers looked comfortable against a swinging ball early on, before putting on a century opening stand until Robinson was caught for 52. Pro Ridee soon followed for 34, caught at mid-on. Akhtar and Moore added 40 before Moore was caught having a wild slog, after scoring 20. The next wicket to go was Aktahr, caught on the line, hitting 34 large runs. Morris was back amongst the runs, scoring 32 late on, although Barr and Wilkin failed to trouble the scorers, the latter given harshly out LBW again. Ryton still managed to score 237 all-out, with O'Neill scoring a memorable 5*.
Newcastle City opened with 2 youngsters, and Singh looked the part before he was caught in the gully off O'Neill for 15. Iqbal soon chipped in with the 2nd wicket, Jennison LBW. That brought in the prize wicket of professional Kamran Mansoor. He looked a class act, with 1 huge 6 over the clubhouse, before O'Neill "coached" him out, and had him caught in the gully by Ridee. Iqbal again chipped in with the 4th wicket. A stand of 60 for the 5th wicket changed the game before young Lewis Barr was brought on. An inspired bowling change by the captain. Barr then accounted for 5 of the next 6 wickets, his 1st 5-for, and surely not the last. Ridee finally got in on the act, taking the 9th wicket. Ryton 20 points Newcastle City 8. (Iqbal 2-29, O'Neill 2-27, Ridee 1-51, Barr 5-33). Ryton travel to Ashington next week.
Ryton's 2nd XI are still searching for their 1st win of the season. Bowled out for 110, Newcastle City were never in trouble and won by 7 wickets. |
| Mixed weekend for 1st XI - Saturday, June 14, 2008Sorry for the delay in the report!
Ryton CC 1st XI suffered mixed fortunes over last weekend. Saturday brought a second defeat in a row against Annfield Plain. The hosts decied to bat on what is generally regarded as the best batting track in the league. Opener Donnelly hit 3 fours in the opening 2 overs before Ridee snared him caught behind. Ridee struck 3 balls later and the Plain were 13-2. This then became 35-3 with O'Neill bagging a wicket. At 87-5, Ryton wwere well on top, although professional Fernando loomed ominously. Having struggled with the bat all season, it was sods law that he came off against Ryton, and he was 115* at the end, and Annfleid Plain reached 190-6, with some lusty late hitting.
Rytons openera again bulit a solid fpundation, moving to 41-0 before Robinson was caught at 1st slip for 15. It was a case of deja vue, as Ryton's middle order again failed to deliver, moving the score onto 56-5, Maughan and Khan sharing the wickets. Howevere, with Ridee still at the crease, and Ryton batting down to no.10, there was still hope. Ridee and Barr moved the score to 90, before Ridee was run-out of a no-ball for 40!. Ryton edged the score past 100 to gain another point, before they were all out for 113. Annfiled Plain 20 pts Ryton 4 points.
Sunday, however, brought a retrun to winning ways. Hosting Ponteland in the Welstream Cup, and without several key players, Ryton beat Ponteland by 16 runs. In their alloted 40 overs, Ryton scored 251 all-out. Their were contributions from several players-Moore, Wilkin and Morris early in the innings, before Rowell 65 and Brooks 49* changed the scoreline with some huge hitting.
The score always looked a good one, however, Pont set about the total with gusto, and at 90-0 off 15, it was game on. Pont maintained the scoring rate throught the innings, but lost regular wickets and finished up 16 runs short, all-out for 235. Ryton entertain Newcastle City at home next Sat in the league and also travel to Chopwell in the next Wellstream round later in June. |
| Catches cost 1st XI dear - Tuesday, June 03, 2008Ryton CC 1st XI came back down to earth with a bump with a 30 run defeat against Leadgate. Following 3 wins within 5 days in the previous week, Ryton were firm favourites to pick up their 6th win from 7 games. Ryton skipper won only his 3rd toss of the year, and asked Leadgate to bat first on a damp wicket following heavy Friday rain. Ryton were without injured Akhtar and wilkin with work commitments. Sutton and Harms the replacements. Leadgate made a steady start 30-0 off 15 overs, before Iqbal made the breakthrough. O'Neill bowled his first 5 overs for 5 maidens, and bowled his 15 overs straight through taking 1-47, getting some serious swing. Iqbal bowled his 10 overs for 19, picking up 2 wickets. In between, Ryton created numerous chances, with opener Hockaday dropped on 4, going on to make 27, and Innes dropped on 0 before he was caught for 30. It was these chances that unltimately proved to cost Ryton the game. Some excemellent late bowling from Ridee 4-40 and Brooks 3-20, bowled out Leadgate for 136.
On a hot afternoon, openers Ridee and Robinson made a decent enough start, before Ridee ran himself out going for 2, his first failure , making only 19. Morris was next out LBW in Anderson's first over. Robinson had moved onto 41, before he was Anderson's next victim and Rowell followed next ball. Lewis Barr was dropped on the hat-trick ball. Wickets and runs continued to follow, with no Ryton batsman able to make a significant or match-winning contribution (Moore 13, Barr 13, Iqbal 4, Brooks 0, Harms 0, Sutton 5*, O'Neill 2). Murray wrapped up the game with 3-3 in 5 overs, Ryton finishing 31 runs short. This meant that Ryton dropped to 3rd in the league, behind Swalwell and Sacriston. Ryton visit Annfield Plain next weekend, looking to get back to winning ways with their strongest team possible.
Ryton's 2nd XI were humbled for 96, Leadgate knocking off the runs in 11 overs! |
| Ryton storm into Quarters - Wednesday, May 28, 2008Ryton CC 1st XI stormed into the 1/4 finals of the League Cup with a resounding 7 wicket victory over league leaders Swalwell. Ryton, missing 5 1st XI players were asked to field, as Swalwell decided to bat in a game reduced to 16 overs. Ryton, with only 2 recognised bowlers, were instantly under the cosh, with Swalwell racing to 60 off 6 overs, Pattison and Taylor hitting boundaries aplenty. The introduction of Robinson though changed the game. Giving a masterclass in off-spin reminiscent of Murali, Robinson extracted vicious turn and bounce to claim 4-24 and a run-out to boot. Swalwell managed to scramble to 135-5 off 16, with Joe Harms showing much promise bowling 4 good overs of leg-spin.
Moore and Ridee got off to a flier, Moore dispatching his 1st ball for 6, before he was run-out for 11. Rowell came in and carried off from Tynedale, before he was caught on the line for 9. Ridee, as usual, demonstrated some cultured strokes along with some vicious hitting not demonstrated in the league, with 60 runs. Old-timer Morris came in and scored 32 off 16 balls, before Brooks hit the winning boundary, with 3 overs left
Ryton play either Newcastle City, Alnwick or Seaton Burn in the 1/4 finals. |
| Ryton wriggle of the hook - Monday, May 26, 2008Ryton CC 1st XI managed to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat, with a 2 wicket win at Hexham team, Tynedale, on Bank Holiday Monday. In a game scheduled for the opening day of the season, Ryton again lost the toss, and the hosts decided to bat first. Ryton, with returning Rowell, fresh from his honeymoon, made another good start, with pro Ridee removing opener Scandle with the score on 17. Boundaries then flowed as the scoring increased, before professional Graham fell into a field placing trap, by spooning a catch first ball to Robinson, after scoring 20. Wicketkeeper Crichton then blasted all parts of the crease with some expansive drives, surviving a dropped catch and a dubious caught behind. Akhtar then removed the dangerous Prudhoe, Robinson taking another good catch, before he also accounted for Crichton, injuring his shoulder in the process. Home skipper Darling then hit some lusty 6's over midwicket before Iqbal bowled him for 21. Tynedale then re-grouped, and along with some poor bowling and fine straight hitting, managed to get over the 200 mark, posting 204-6 (Ridee 2-45, O'Neill 1-27, Akhtar 2-23, Iqbal 1-59, Brooks 0-35).
Ryton, with Barr opening up with Ridee, managed to get to 21, before Barr was bowled by Thompson. Skipper Robinson entered, fresh from a nose bleed, and he and Ridee pushed the score onto 75, before Robinson was caught behind for 17. Old timer Morris, continued his performance at Shotley Bridge with clean straight hits. Professional Ridee, looking as comfortable as ever, posted his 4th 50 of the season, before he was bowled by Armstrong for 70. Moore followed 2 balls later, and when Morris was caught on the line next over, Ryton had gone from 115-2, to 119-5. Wilkin dispatched 2 sixes in 3 balls, before being out LBW for the 3rd time this season. The partnership between Rowell and Iqbal changed the game back in Ryton's favour, Rowell, who had obviuosly had his new wife bowl to him on the cruise ship, picked up from last season, and lashed 43 runs, including several huge sixes and lusty 4's. He was bowled by spinner Pringle, leaving Ryton needing 19 with 3 wickets left. Brooks was clean bowled by Darling for 4, meaning O'Neill had his 2nd bat of the season. Some staunch defending, and delicate sweep shots from O'Neill, along with Iqbal placing the ball into space, left Ryton 10 short with 3 overs left. O'Neill took some pain for the team with a heart ball from Darling. Next over, O'Neills missed attempted sweep led to 4 more byes, and O'Neills single next ball meant 1 hit would win the game. Iqbal duly obliged smashing a full toss through the covers for 4. Ryton scoring 200+ for the 4th consecutive game, and gaining 18 points to remain 2nd in the table.
Ryton host Leadgate next Saturday in the league, whilst the entertain Swalwell at home in the League Cup on Wednesday.
Ryton's 2nd team put in their best display of the season against a strong Tynedale team. Tynedale scoring 223/8, and Ryton replying with 221/6-Fordham, Williams and Ward all makinf significant contributions. |
| Ryton make it 4 from 5. - Sunday, May 25, 2008Ryton CC 1st XI recorded their 4th league win in 5 games with an excellent 5 wicket victory at Shotley Bridge. Asked to field first, Ryton got off to another good start, as Shotley Bridge, including test star Paul Collingwoods brother Peter and new overseas professional quickie from Sri Lanka. Ridee made the 1st breakthrough, having Brown caught for 7 at point. O'Neill and Akhtar soon joined in and Shotley were 50-3, however Collingwood remained. Iqbal soon took the 4th wicket, and Shotley were 100-4 off 30 overs. Professional Ranjith survived a close LBW 1st ball, and then proceeded to smash the ball over cow corner at every opportunity, ending up run-out for 84 on the last ball. Shotley scoring 254-6 (Ridee 1-68, O'Neill 1-20, Akhtar 1-29, Iqbal 2-84, Barr 0-35)
On an absolute belter of a track, Ryton again got off to a good start. Robinson and Ridee saw off the new ball from left arm quick Ranjith, to post 70 off 14 overs, before Robinson played a loose shot and was caught for 39. Akhtar soon departed for 11, and Ryton still needed 150 to win from 22 overs. Moore and Ridee added 50 before the prize wicket of Ridee fell, caught in gully for 60. Old timers Moore and Morris decided to take the attack to Shotley, and after numerous 4's and 6's had been dispatched, Ryton's target was under 35 before Moore was out for 56. Iqbal departed 4th ball for 6 and the nerves set in. However, Morris and Wilkin saw the team home with 3 overs to spare, Morris hitting a boundary to seal a fine victory. (Robinson 39, Ridee 60, Akhtar 11, Moore 56, Morris 60*, Iqbal 6, Wilkin 3*). Ryton 18 points, Shotley 7 points. |
| Fine Weekend - Monday, May 19, 2008Ryton CC 1st XI got back on the winning trail with a 90 run victory at home against Backworth on Sat 17th May. In a delayed start due to morning rain, Ryton were asked to bat first. Not surprising as the visitors were bundled out for 60 the previous week. Both openers got off to a flier, before Robinson was caught behind for 24. Professional Ridee and Akhtar continued with a high run rate, some lusty blows and cultured drives bringing boundaries. Akhtar was next out caught by the wicketkeeper for 24. Morris came in and 2nd ball mowed a 4 over midwicket, befire he was caught for a rapid 15. Barr was next out for 2, a quicker ball doing for him. Meanwhile, Ridee was keeping up the scoring, bringing up his first club century with a fine sweep shot. Iqbal was next at the crease, and 4 sixes in his 31 upped the scoring again. Wilkin added 21 runs at number 7. Professional Ridee was left not out 147, surely one of the finest knocks the ground had seen.
Backworth set about an unlikely victory with gusto, opener Rankin hitting some fine shots over midwicket before Ridee had him caught at slip. Taylor came and hit an unbeaten 50 for the visitors, whilst wickets fell regularly, the bowlers all chipping in. Backworths pro failed to trouble the scorers and left the ground with a few words of wisdom from the hosts fielders, something which he seemed to think was OK to do when bowling! Ryton could only manage 8 wickets, but still picked up 19 points to remain in 2nd place in the league behind Swalwell. (Ridee 4-40, O'Neill 1-25, Brooks 0-38, Iqbal 2-40, Barr 1-12, Thompson 0-11).
On Sunday Ryton won their re-arranged Wellstream Cup fixture with Burnopfield at a canter. Ryton set the visitors 294 to win from 40 overs, with Ridee and Akhtar both notching fine hundreds. Burnopfield were never interested in chasing the score, and managed to notch 140-8 from their overs. Ryton face Ponteland at home in the next round.
Rytons 2nd team poor run of form continued at Backworth, going down by 4 wickets. |
|
| Friday night practice cancelled - Tuesday, May 13, 2008Friday 16th May club practice has been cancelled due to a 3rd team Cup game v Seaton Burn taking priority. Training sessions will return next Friday (23rd) and will also be on during the school 1/2 term holiday. |
| 1st XI go down by 5 runs - Monday, May 12, 2008Ryton CC 1st XI could not continue their winning start to the season on Sat 10th May, losing at home to Sacriston by 5 runs. With a strong side, including ex Durham star Melvyn Betts, Sacriston won the toss and decided to bat, on what looked a good track and on the hottest day of the year. Ryton again made a good start, the run rate below 2 an over for the 1st 10 overs. Ex Ryton pro Shield the only man out, O'Neill bagging the wicket. Hubber was soon caught out by Robinson off Iqbal, and Ryton were well on top at 35-2. A stand of over 100 between Betts and Sacriston pro frustrated the bowling attack, although Ryton were always in control. A flurry of late wickets from Iqbal and Ridee meant the visitors ended up 200-7 from their 50 overs. (O'Neill 1-23, Ridee 1-50, Iqbal 4-49, Brooks 0-44, Barr 0-18).
Ryton opened up with Robinson and pro Ridee, and made a strong start 28-0, before Hubber bowled Robinson for 7. Akhtar and Ridee then controlled the game with a stand of 90, before Ridee was caught at mid-wicket, playing a poor shot to a full toss. The game then changed, 4 wickets falling for 20 runs, with none of the middle order being able to make a significant contribution, all scoring in the teens. Brooks and Iqbal, the saviours against Lintz, then looked like doing the same again, needing 10 to win from 5 overs with 3 wickets left. Some rash shots and good bowling however, meant that Ryton were all out for 195. (Robinson 7, Ridee 55, Akhtar 43, Wilkin 0, Rowell 15, Moore 16, Barr 14, Iqbal 18, Brooks 16, Sutton 2*, O'Neill 1).
Ryton 7 points, Sacriston 20 points.
Ryton entertain Backworth at home on 17th May, and Burnopfield on 18th May (Wellstream Cup).
Ryton 2nd XI produced and encouraging display against Sacriston, despite coming 2nd best. Mackay rolling back the years to score 50 and take 5 wickets, this under the scrutiny of his son, playing his 1st senior game. Ryton 175-9, Sacriston 176-6. |
| Lintz v Ryton 1st XI-League Cup - Thursday, May 08, 2008Ryton made it 3 out of 3, by winning their first 20-20 cup game of the season. Ryton posted 179-2 (Akhtar 112*, Robinson 59*), Akhtar hitting the last over for 36!!. Lintz made a quick start and continued to keep up with the rate but lost wickets regularly and were all out for 165 (Ridee 4-30, Wilkin 2-29). |
| 1st XI continue to impress. - Sunday, May 04, 2008Ryton CC 1st XI maintained their 100% return to top flight cricket, with a comfortable 6 wicket victory over neighbours Benwell & Walbottle. Welcoming back new father Keith Morris and professional Anil Ridee's debut, it was a strong Ryton squad that decided to field first on a wet wicket. The game had been reduced to 45 overs. Iqbal and O'Neill again started off well, going at about 1 an over for the first 10, but it was a Brooks run-out that got the vital 1st wicket. Iqbal and Ridee then set about demolishing the Benwell line up, Iqbal with some vicious turn and flight and Ridee bowling a variation of cutters, leg-breaks and swinging the ball both ways. Brooks then chipped in a couple of wickets, and the returning O'Neill, steaming up the hill, bagged his customary wicket. Benwell & Walbottle were all out for 102 in thr 45th over.
Professional Ridee and Wilkin opened the Ryton innings against the off-spin of Singh and some medium pace. Wilkin was harshly adjudged to be out LBW for 6. Ridee showed his class with some strong straight hitting, and some wristy flicks of the pads. Ryton lost 2 wickets in an over, to go from 50-1, to 50-3, Morris and Akhtar the men out. Rowell and Ridee then upped the scoring rate, before Rowell was out stumped for 15. It was left to Robinson and Ridee to see the game through, with Ridee hitting a boundary to wrap up a comfortable victory. It was a fine victory over a side, who, according to local press reports in the week, would easily beat Ryton if they played to their potential. Well obviously that potential was not played to was it?! Ryton have now picked up 38 points from a possible 40 in their 2 opening games. They entertain Sacriston next Saturday at home as well as travelling to Lintz on Wednesday for a League Cup game.
Rytons 2nd XI again struggled, losing heavily to Percy Main. The 2nd XI have lost both their games this season. A combination of injuries, unavailability and poor batting has meant a difficult start to the season for the 2's. |
| 1st XI Back with a Bang! - Monday, April 28, 2008Saturday 26th April saw Ryton 1st XI return to NTSCL A1 Division action after a five year absence. Visitors Lintz, after a creditable 4th placed finish last season, were expected to pose a seious challenge to the Barmoor Park outfit. Home skipper Robinson won the 1st toss of the year, and put Lintz into bat on a wet but true wicket. Some tight bowling from O'Neill & Iqbal saw the first 10 over go for 15 runs. Lintz openers continued to accummulate until Brooks made the breakthrough, Sutton taking a catch behind to dismiss Lumley. Brooks removed Hughes in his next over. Some lusty hitting and quick singles got Lintz upto a competitive total of 175-6 (Iqbal 1-19, O'Neill 2-55, Brooks 2-42, Barr 0-20, Wilkin 0-21). Robinson got the Ryton reply off to quick start with a couple of boundaries before he ran out opening partner Wilkin for 6. Debutant Akhtar, sporting a designer limp, showed some class hitting consecutive 4 & 6 off Christie. Robinson was next out for 17, the old timer Clennell removing him. Clennell continued to push and probe, and steadily worked his way through the batting line up, leaving Ryton on a precarious 82-6. Brooks and Iqbal then combined cultured slogs, heaves over mid-wicket and some clean straight hitting to chase down the total with 5 overs left, Brooks undefeated on 50 and Iqbal on 45. Ryton claimed 18 points and travel to Benwell & Walbottle next Staurday, with profressional Ridee and Morris returning to the side. (Robinson 17, Wilkin 6, Akhtar 27, Moore 10, BArr 16, Rowell 5, Iqbal 45*, Brooks 50*)
